Alien of the Day: Nesting Ostroid – click for original image

This is an Ostroid in his nest. I like this hybrid – his smooth head, long neck, exotic plumage along with muscular articulated limbs and opposable digits. Those feathers looks pretty vestigial to me, but who knows maybe they unfold into beautiful strong wings so that he can glide up to the top of the mountains. Nah…

Had some fun with with Stephanie Shimerdla’s wonderful feather and cloud brushes on this one. (Thanks as always!!)

The image on the right is the original drawing but I decided to play with it a little bit by creating two separate mirror image copies as the original is quite unsymmetrical. I think the results are interesting (OK the lighting is all wrong as I spent only a few minutes doing some basic reworking on the light and shadow.) but if nothing else it shows that faces – even alien ones – are rarely symmetrical anyway, so splitting an image in half and mirroring it is a good way to make it more creepy! Though this one is pretty creepy to begin with. More of a monster day than an alien.
